Classy Cricket

**Update** Despite playing a great tournament in the Erewash Finals at Sandiacre, Chaucer's mixed team finished 2nd.

Chaucer Juniors have enjoyed a double dose of cricketing success this week and still have an opportunity for more!

On Tuesday the Y5/6 Girls Cricket Team [Evie Farmer (c), Evie Sisson, Alysia Briggs, Emma East, Emily Stuart, Harley Vest, Katelyn Hanson, Macie Lees Vince, Iris Castro and Emily Pickering] travelled to Sawley and Long Eaton CC and overcame a stiff challenge from Firfield to become Erewash Kwik Cricket Champions. While both teams were quite evenly matched in terms of their bowling, the Chaucer girls held a distinct advantage with their batting, hitting regular bounderies throughout their innings.

The whole team performed well but Iris Castro won the Player of the Match award due to some particularly authoritative batting.

The team will now compete in the Derbyshire County Finals on Tuesday 24th June at Derbyshire County Cricket Ground, 10am-3:30pm.

The boys (and Emily Pickering again!) had their chance on Wednesday. After numerous rearrangements, the Erewash North Schools Mixed Kwik Cricket competition finally took place at a sun-drenched West Hallam White Rose CC.

The squad [Oliver Wheeldon (c), Spencer Mottram, Harry Hicken, Robson Hazard, Oliver Burrows, Louise Villeza, Billy Lynch, Ethan Lowe and Emily] had a slightly disappointing start, losing to St Thomas by 4 runs.

However, Chaucer responded well, comfortably defeating Scargill B and Cotmanhay before edging a keenly fought match against Scargill A. In that final match, both teams scored the exact same number of runs but Chaucer prevailed thanks to taking more wickets. [Each wicket lost meant a 5 run deduction from the team's total].

3 wins from 4 matches resulted in Chaucer finishing joint top with St Thomas. Both teams move on to the Erewash Finals, which will be held tomorrow (Friday) at Sandiacre Town CC from 1pm-3pm. Draycott and Dovedale Primary Schools await after qualifying from the South Schools event.

Oliver Burrows gained our Player of the Tournament award after he stepped in on late notice after the withdrawal of some Y6s. Although not having had the benefit of the more recent practices, Oliver proved to be a valuable member of the team and in one spectacular spell of bowling against Scargill A, he took 3 wickets in one over!
