Awe-Inspiring Athletes

Chaucer's junior sports stars once again showed off their athletic prowess in the recent Sportshall Athletics Derbyshire Finals at the University of Derby.

Having been fortunate enough to reach the Sportshall County Finals in 2014 and 2015, and witnessed the exceedingly high standards, Chaucer were under no illusions how much hard work would need to be invested before the tournament if they were to achieve any success. Thankfully, the squad was undaunted by a demanding practise schedule and was able to rise to the challenge presented by the 9 other best schools from each district of Derbyshire.

Chaucer made a promising start on the Track, performing well in both Obstacle races, before settling into a consistent rythym for the other relay races. Although Chaucer didn't gain many first places, they never finished last in their heat and usually finished in the top 3. Meanwhile, many children claimed to have achieved highly respectable scores in the throwing & jumping disciplines, as they returned from their Field events. (Please click here to check the blog for more detailed scores / results that have been forwarded on by Derbyshire Sport.)

At the end of the competition, children and staff waited with bated breath as the team rankings were read out in reverse order. Chaucer were delighted when they were revealed as Bronze medalists! The result matches last year's accomplishment. (In 2014 we finished 4th!) It was a great relief to the team that 3rd place was good enough to trigger a reward stop at George's Tradition Fish & Chips on the way home to Ilkeston!

Congratulations to Deer Park from NE Derbyshire and Cavendish Close from Derby City, who were Gold and Silver, respectively. Congratulations also to Erewash's other representatives, Mapperley CofE, who placed 6th in the Small Schools event.

Many thanks to Kirk Hallam Community Academy for allowing us to use their facilities at an inclement time of year. Thanks also to Mrs Hayes, Mrs Proctor and Mrs Wheeldon for their help on practise nights. Thanks to Mrs Wheatley for taking some lovely photos! Finally, thanks to the parents for having such great kids!
