On the 8th March , Chaucer Junior School took part in the Big Cookathon. This was a nationwide competition to get the most people cooking a healthy meal on the same day. We joined lots of other Let's Get Cooking clubs across the country preparing and cooking our healthy meal, which was Spicy Chicken Fajitas.
Classes 4/5H and 4/5T, along with several adult helpers, spent the morning preparing , cooking and then eating the Fajitas. The children chopped red peppers, green peppers, red onions, garlic and chicken. They listened carefully to how to chop safely by demonstrating some very good bridge and claw method chopping techniques.
Everybody had a go at frying up the chicken , vegetables and spices in the woks. Mr Higgins's Classroom smelt fantastic by morning break and everyone was looking forward to sampling their hard work!
We served the Fajita mixture with tortilla wraps , some shredded lettuce, some sour cream and some fresh Tomato Salsa - that we had also made. Some of the children , at first , were a little reluctant to try something new. However everyone did sample the Fajitas and most children returned for seconds.
All children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the morning. By the end of the morning everyone had learned lots of new skills, sampled new foods and had even surprised themselves by trying new vegetables and actually enjoying them!
Thanks to all the adults that gave up their time to cook with us, hope they enjoyed the food too!
The Fajita recipe is also on our website, we had hoped that you would help us out by cooking at home and are really pleased that 13 people did cook the recipe at home, making a grand total of 80 people participating from our school.
