Girls' Football Vs Ashgate Y5/6

Abbey Ord opened the scoring with a stunning strike into the top corner!

Chaucer Juniors took advantage of the gorgeous weather to host an enthralling end of season 7v7 friendly match against Ashgate Primary School's Y5/6 Girls team.

After a cagey beginning, with both sides trying a patient approach, Abbey Ord opened the scoring with a stunning strike into the top corner! Emma East's good run and pass provided the assist.

Alysia Briggs and Emily Pickering went close with good shots that narrowly missed the post. Ashgate had their own sighter at goal from a free-kick that rolled agonisingly wide, but there was no further scoring and Chaucer held their lead until half-time when both teams took to the shade for a well-earned breather.

In the 2nd half, the game opened up as the players began to tire in the heat. Chaucer took advantage of the extra space to fashion a glorious passing move, which ended in Pickering rattling the woodwork.

However, it was Ashgate that were next to score. One of their midfielders produced a strong run to hold off 3 chasing defenders and put a low shot across goal, which found its way into the bottom corner past Abigail Woods.

Chaucer responded well. Briggs exploited some hesitant defending to poach a goal from inside the Ashgate penalty area, hammering just inside the post beyond a stranded keeper. Emily "Emilio" Pickering also scored a superb long-distance effort, which she thumped into the goallie's bottom right corner.

Continuing to use the ball well and staying disciplined to prevent Ashgate from having clear-cut opportunities of their own, the 3-1 lead looked quite comfortable until East inadvertantly flicked the ball into her own net from an innocuous corner.

Still a 3-2 win seemed very much on the cards but Ashgate found a final burst of energy to win the ball in midfield and counter-attack down their right wing in the dying seconds. Chaucer's midfielders for once failed to get back to help an outnumbered defence and a low cross found an unmarked striker, who had the simple task of tapping in to an open net to make the score 3-3 with the last kick of the match!

Chaucer's Girl of the Match was Abbey Ord for her stylish playmaking, industrious work-rate and versatility in both attacking and defensive situations.

Many thanks to Mr Odell and the Ashgate team for making the trip to us - we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Thanks to all the parents, carers and staff that came to support the teams. Thanks also to Mrs Brandrick for sorting the refreshments, Mrs Briggs for taking over from the resident photographer and to young Mr Briggs for doing a sterling job as referee.
