Boys V Girls Football

Chaucer's final football action of the academic year was an internal 9-a-side Boys Vs Girls friendly.

The event gave a Y4/5 Boys' team an opportunity to gel and stake claims for places in next years' team, while a Y4-6 Girls' team were given the challenge of trying to contend with a higher tempo and more technically gifted players than any they had faced before.

Led by sparkling performances from Denver Toplis, Joel Searcy, Liam Flitter & Jack Mercer, the boys were ruthless from the first whistle onwards and Abigail Woods in goal for the girls was kept extremely busy! A combination of high pressing, slick passing and pace provided a plethora of chances for the boys, most of which were taken.

Predictably, the match and the score were lopsided in the boys' favour but the girls never gave in and carried on trying all the way to the end. Katelyn Hanson and Emily Stuart, in particular, stood-out as part of an overworked defence, but the whole team will have learnt valuable lessons from this character-building experience.

After a short interval, the teams were all mixed up for a new game and the girls that had been so overrun were given the chance to play alongside the boys.

This contest was far more even. Joel Searcy scored early on - a thunderous strike in off the underside of the bar with his (wrong) right foot - to give the Reds the lead. The Yellows pressed hard for an equaliser but Kyle Spurr was outstanding in goal for the Reds and Denver Toplis, Emma East and Ruby Bray missed a host of golden opportunities. The Yellows' last chance came when Emma East was bundled over in the box for a penalty, which she then crashed against the bar!

Girls and boys on both sides left with their reputations enhanced.

Thanks to Mr Smith for refereeing (albeit dodgily!), to Mrs Briggs for photographing and to all the spectators.
