Through to the Finals
Chaucer's Girls' Football Team successfully booked its place in the Erewash Finals later this month by winning the qualification tournament at Friesland yesterday.
Chaucer Junior School's Y5/6 Girls' Football Team (Aaliyah Proctor [c], Katie Mill [v/c], Madison White, Levi Whitehead, Lucy-May Stevenson, Daisy Meers-Miller, Danae Matthew, Charlotte Nuttall, Madeline Ludlam & Julia Welnowska) successfully booked its place in the Erewash Finals later this month by winning the qualification tournament at Friesland yesterday.
Chaucer's first opponents were Sawley. Sawley constantly struggled to clear their lines and the ball remained inside the Sawley half for the whole of the game but the contest finished 0-0 due to some wasteful, rushed finishes. (Player of the game: "Silly" Charlotte Nuttall.)
Refusing to be deterred, Chaucer hit their stride in the 2nd match, against Dovedale. "Lethal" Lucy-May Stevenson opened her account from close range and was soon followed onto the scoresheet by Katie "Skill" Mill. Nuttall showed touches of class to create chances for her teammates and "Jumpin" Julia Welnowska made a significant impact off the substitutes' bench, completing a 3-0 win with a hard, low strike. (Player of the game: Julia Welnowska.)
Cloudside produced a few nice touches but were kept well away from Chaucer's goal by some brave, disciplined defensive interventions by "Mad" Madison White and Levi "Wally" Whitehead. Daisy "Killer" Meers-Miller and "Deadly" Danae were full of running in advanced postitions, while another energetic performance by "Lethal Lucy" earnt her a couple more goals as Chaucer won 2-0. (Player of the game: Lucy-May Stevenson.)
Finally, Chaucer faced Ashbrook and were able to record another 3-0 victory. "Skill" Mill got things rolling with a composed side-foot finish into the corner, before Julia doubled the lead. Aaliyah "Doctor" Proctor eventually found her shooting boots after having missed a catalogue of chances earlier in the tournament to get herself among the scorers. (Player of the game: Katie Mill.)
With an unbeaten record, Chaucer claimed top spot in the group and were followed through the qualifiers by Sawley.
A special mention should go to Madeline "Loony" Ludlam, who has put in alot of time to do extra goalkeeping practise recently but literally had nothing at all to do during the matches. (She touched the ball once in four games...to take one goal-kick!) May all her appearances be so uneventful!
Thanks to Erewash SSP and Friesland School for arranging such a great competition. Many thanks to the Proctor clan and Mr Nuttall for their help with transport and taking photos, also to Emma East (the team's assistant manager / cheerleader).
