Ashgate-Chaucer Challenge Match

Chaucer's Y5/6 Girls' Football team travelled to Derby to participate in an annual friendly match against our good friends from Ashgate Primary

Chaucer's Y5/6 Girls' Football team travelled to Derby to participate in an annual friendly match against our good friends from Ashgate Primary - with the Ashgate-Chaucer Challenge Cup on offer for the winners.

After a tentative opening few minutes in which Ashgate's tall centre forward had the best effort at goal when she sent a shot whistling just past the top corner from distance, Chaucer managed to gain the upper hand and "Lethal" Lucy-May Stevenson was able to open the scoring. Her low shot from the edge of the box beat the keeper to the bottom right corner.

Chaucer maintained their possessional and territorial advantage and had a few chances to increase the lead... But it took until Aaliyah "Doctor" Proctor finally realised that she was meant to kick the ball into the net rather than getting stuck in it herself [see image below] before the scoreboard really began to tick over.

Aaliyah's first goal was a terrific angled drive from wide on the right, which gave Chaucer a 2-0 lead which they took to half-time. Her second goal came straight from the kick-off to the 2nd half. Her powerful strike from the half-way line bounced, bobbled and bamboozled the Ashgate keeper, who was unable to keep it out.

Anything Chaucer could do, Ashgate could do better, as they successfully emulated the tactic of shooting from the kick-off. Taking a sideways pass in her stride, their dangerous centre forward smashed the ball into the top left corner on the goal from inside her own half to give the home team a glimmer of hope.

However, Daisy "Killer" Mears-Miller, who displayed great tactical awareness throughout, stabbed home from close range to quickly restore the three goal cushion. Madeline "Loony" Ludlam had a largely uneventful time in goal but showed good distribution when called upon as Chaucer kept the upper-hand for the remainder of the match. Thanks to composed defending from "Mad" Madi White and Levi "Wally" Whitehead as well as energetic work in midfield by Lucy, Katie "Skill" Mill, "Jumpin" Julia Welnowska, "Silly" Charlotte Nuttall and "Deadly" Danae Matthew, the team was never in much danger.

There was still time for Katie Mill to drill in a penalty [see images above] and for Aaliyah to expertly complete her hat-trick after great work by Nuttall down the right wing.

The Chaucer team was highly delighted to reclaim the Challenge Cup that Ashgate had taken due to a 2-1 win last summer.

Final Score: Ashgate 1 Vs Chaucer 6 (Stevenson, Proctor 3, Mears-Miller, Mill)

Thanks to Mr Nuttall and both Mr Proctors for their help with transport. Many thanks also to Mr Odell and Ashgate Primary School for being wonderful hosts again.
