Swimming Gala

Eight Year 5 children had an enjoyable but tiring morning at Victoria Park Leisure Centre for a swimming festival.

The team (Chloe Foster, Abigail Woods, Alysia Briggs, Lewis Haslam, Joe Harrison, Oliver Wheeldon, Robson Hazard and Robert Eaton), who were competing against many Year 6 children from other schools, represented Chaucer with distinction, showing wonderful team spirit and perseverence.

The competition took the form of a series of time trials. Oliver won one of the backstroke heats and Joe followed suit later on in one of the freestyle races, helping Chaucer to come 4th or 5th overall. Although many of the results did not go our way, the swimmers were gracious in defeat and kept their complaints about other school's dubious interpretations of the "butterfly" stroke to a minimum.

Special mentions must go to Chloe Foster and Abigail Woods, who both volunteered to do double shifts in some of the girls' relay races. Chloe did 2 lengths in the 4 x 25m freestyle. Abigail did the breaststoke and butterfly lengths in the medley relay. As both of those strokes set off from the same end of the pool, Abigail had to climb out and run around back to the start before Alysia could get there in the pool!

The accompanying staff & parents had every reason to be proud of these young swimmers.
