Chaucer Junior Girls' football team had an enjoyable first outing of the season in a 7-a-side tournament at Kirk Hallam Community College last Thursday.

In their opening match of the round-robin format, the girls were a little hesitant. The team from Grangemount Ockbrook seemed more experienced, more forceful and ran out deserved 4-0 winners.

However, Chaucer did not get downhearted and began their second encounter with renewed vigour. Needing to beat Dallimore to reach the Final, the girls dominated throughout and earned a comfortable victory. Emily Pickering scored the first goal, a powerful length of the field run that ended in a spectacular thumping shot into the top right corner! Alysia Briggs produced a virtuoso performance, claiming a hat-trick of well-taken goals. Abbie Ord also got in on the act, placing an accurate low shot into the bottom corner to make the final score 5-0.

After a brief interlude, Chaucer regained their focus and took their place in the Final, where they met Grangemount again. The team from Ockbrook took an early lead from a well-worked throw-in but the Chaucer girls worked very hard to keep the contest close. Harley Vest made a couple of outstanding saves to keep Chaucer within touching distance and the team put in a much improved performance from the sides' first meeting. However, Grangemount were just that little bit too good. It ended 1-0.

Well done girls. Considering the timescale, being runners-up was a very creditable performance and all the staff & parents were extremely proud of your efforts and positive attitudes.
