We visited Trowell Garden Centre to see local Sculptor Rachel Carter make her beautiful butterfly
I was asked by Rachel if I would like to take some Children to visit her at Trowell Garden Centre, whilst she is in residence making her beautiful steel butterfly over the next few weeks. So I jumped at the chance, I thought what a wonderful experience for the children.
The 'Butterfly Sculpture' is being made for Derby's Sands Charity (Stillbirth & neonatal death charity). On its completion it will be taken to the Baby Memorial Garden at Markeaton Crematorium. This is Rachel's second sculpture that she has made for the Memorial Garden, the first being a cacoon sculpture placed on the garden's opening in 2014. The sculptures are there so local people who have lost babies either before, during or after birth can hang name petals from. So as you can imagine when Rachel asked me I felt privileged that the children could contribute to her special project, and something they'll always remember being part of
The butterfly's steel frame has been made by Ilkeston firm HTF Stainless LTD. It features a wing outline of round bar steel filled with a metal grid work. The body is shaped panels of steel formed to create the rounded body of the butterfly. Each of the butterfly's wings will be woven with synthetic cane using crochet finger stitching. The cane is an extruded blend of plastic made to resemble a natural cane and comes in coiled rolls in a range of colours. The weaving begins with a simple chain stitch and carries on across the entire four metre wingspan, as each coil ends another coil is knotted on and the weaving continues.
If you get the chance please go and visit Rachel at Trowell Garden Centre in the 'Digg Cafe' to view it for yourselves. I'm sure she'd love to tell you about this wonderful sculpture she is creating. Thank you to Rachel for giving us lessons on how to chain stitch with the cane, and letting us be part of weaving the butterfly wings. Thank you also to Trowell GC for the refreshments!
