BRITISH VALUES AT CHAUCER JUNIOR SCHOOL
Our core values demonstrate our commitment to promoting British values and are visible throughout the school environment. Our core values are linked very closely to British Values and are promoted in everything in we do.
”The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At Chaucer Junior these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
Democracy is an important value at our school and is rife within the school.
School Council - Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council, our school council comprises of 2 children from each class who meet regularly and look at ways to improve our school.
Pupil and parent questionnaires - Children also have a chance to share opinions through Pupil questionnaires.
House Captains - House Captains are elected by pupils as well the winner of the class Core Values Award each term is based solely on pupil votes. Our school behaviour policy involves rewards which the pupils vote on as a class group.
Links with local MPs - We have established links with local MPs and councillors who visit the school to talk to the pupils, this has ensured that children have a knowledge of how public services operate and how they are held to account.
PSHCE - PSHCE (see policy and scheme of work for further details) is taught in every year group and includes aspects of democracy. Cirlce time is also used to discuss issues and resolve problems.
THE RULE OF LAW:
The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Our system for behaviour is aligned to an agreed set of codes and if the children are given verbal warnings this is always set against the agreed school behaviour policy.
Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. This is reinforced with our Reflection Room. Children will be sent to the Reflection Room if they do not follow all the rules in the Shine Contract. Whilst in the Reflection Room the children will have the chance to reflect on the rule they have broken, the consequences of breaking that rule and how they could prevent this from happening again.
Visits from authorities such as the Police; Fire Service; Lifeguards etc. are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message.To encourage and promote good behaviour, attitude and work, we have devised a reward system which is consistently followed throughout school. Rewards are given in the form of stickers, house points and certificates. Children's achievements are also recognised during special Assemblies.
PSHCE - throughout our PSHCE curriculum the importance of rules including E safety rules is discussed. In year 3 children will create their own classroom rules. Children also study the rules of different religions.
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safety, through of provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
Achiever's Assembly - helps children develop their own self-confidence in their own ability whilst also celebrating the achievements of others.
Forest School - a safe, open environment where children can explore and develop their self-confidence and self-knowledge
Secret Garden and Ocean Room - to encourage individuals to make the right choices.
PSHCE curriculum - encourages children to challenge stereotypes.
Competitive Sports Links - allowing children to strive to be the best, whilst promoting good sportsmanship and celebrating the achievements of others.
Learning Review - allows children to receive individual personalised feedback on their success during the term. This builds self confidence and provides each child with a platform to talk openly with their teacher.
Responsibilities - Children have individual responsibilities of being monitors, buddies and mini leaders.
MUTUAL RESPECT AND TOLERANCE :
Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around Core Values such as ‘Respect’, and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. Posters around the school promote respect for others and this is reiterated through our classroom and SHINE CONTRACT, as well as our behaviour policy.
Mutual respect is also promoted through
Charity - we hold regular fund raising and enterprise events for a variety of charities.
Participating in community events - such as the Community market, choir events and gardening events at the Cenotaph and Victoria Park, the food bank at Arena Church.
We have built links with schools in Gambia and with a school in California.
Visits to the Holocaust centre in Year 6. Year 6 also visit the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day and take part in the Remebrance service there.
This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and discussions about diversity have been followed and supported by learning in RE and PSHE. Within school, members of different faiths or religions are also encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. This includes parents coming in to talk as well as pupils.
Chaucer Junior School has a growing multi-faith community where each person is respected and valued equally without regard to ability, gender, faith, heritage or race. The need for mutual respect is embedded throughout the school. Our range of PSHE resources including SEAL and “Kindness leaves” include respect for others as a key focus. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. Classes ‘buddy’ with other year groups and the Friendship Team help with this. All pupils and adults respect and help each other in and around the school.
BRITISH VALUES DAY
The aim of British Values Day was to learn about what it means to be British and to learn about the four values.
In the morning all year groups had fun learning about what it means to be British. Some activities included singing the National Anthem, learning about the Royal Family, learning about the Union Jack and London landmarks, taking part in afternoon tea.
In the afternoon each year group looked at one of the values. The challenge was to be able to give the rest of the school information on each value in an assembly at the end of the day.

Year 6 - Individual Liberty
Year 3 were able to show their understanding of Mutual Respect and tolerance by writing their own song lyrics and singing them to the tune of the National Anthem. They also looked at how poppies are a symbol of respect and talked about how we show respect.
Year 5 visited the Council Offices and were able to have question time with the Mayor and Councillor Dawson. They also held a debate on Space Travel in the Council Room.
Year 6 held a whole class debate.

Learning about human rights when Anne from Amnesty International came to talk to us about refugees and asylum seekers.
Year 4 visiting the council offices this week , march 13th. They held a debate on whether the wall should be built in America. They were also able to meet the Mayor and learn all about his election and role. A brilliant way of learning about Democracy!
