9/12/11 - Futsal Competition @ Ilkeston Ormiston Academy
Chaucer Y6 Football Team had to be content with runners-up position in a closely contested 5-A-Side Futsal (indoor football) competion at Ilkeston Academy.
Carrying on from where they left off earlier in the week in Heanor, the team began in blistering fashion. Charlie Palmer and Kieran Lynch both scored twice as Chaucer overcame Cotmanhay Juniors 4-0.
Scargill CofE Primary were the next victims. Ellis Briggs and Charlie were on the scoresheet while Lewis Smith in goal kept his 3rd consecutive clean-sheet of the week (including the game against Howitt on Tuesday)! It finished with Chaucer taking a routine 2-0 win.
Chaucer started their final group game brightly, taking an early 2-0 lead over St Thomas Primary thanks to a brace from Ellis. However, with Chaucer's place in the final virtually guaranteed, complacency appeared to spread through the team and things began to unravel on the pitch. St Thomas were the better team for the second half of the match and deservedly fought back to earn a 2-2 draw.
Fortunately, the dropped points did not cost Chaucer a place in the final. Chaucer still topped the group and faced a re-match with 2nd placed Scargill in the finale.
George Ball put Chaucer ahead with an accurate low drive from the right wing but the lead did not last long. Scargill began to dominate with hard work and slick passing movements while Chaucer's passing, communication and team-work, which had been so effective earlier on, slowly evaporated. In the end Scargill coasted to an easy 3-1 victory, and would have won by more had it not been for Lewis' heroics in goal.
Although the final outcome was disappointing, it was valuable competitive experience for the team and it gave some reasons to be encouraged. We now know that if the players stick to the game-plan, work together as a team and don't become over-confident, they have a chance to be successful in future events.
