Stunning Sportshall Success!
this week's performances by Chaucer's Year 5/6 Athletics team produced absolute shock!
If doing so well in the North Schools event last week and being invited to compete in the Erewash Sportshall Finals was a pleasant surprise, this week's performances by Chaucer's Year 5/6 Athletics team produced absolute shock!
Competing against the best teams from the Erewash borough (St Thomas, Granby and Sawley Juniors) for the right to represent Erewash in the Derbyshire Finals, an outstanding team of Abbie Ord, Harley Vest, Emily Pickering, Lauren Heeps, Alysia Briggs, Amber Glenn, Emma East, Evie Farmer, Evie Bloor, Emily Stuart, Grace Freeman, O'Mera Robinson, Robson Hazard, Oliver Wheeldon, Spencer Mottram, Finn Elliott-Hufton, James Wheatley, Jake Stevenson, Tyler Place, Will Lowe, George Brain, Harry Hicken and Michael Stuart was a model of consistency throughout.
Although, they won only one race (the boys' 2+2 lap relay), Chaucer's runners had six 2nd place finishes and four 3rds. There were improved relay changes, no dropped batons and the only time we came outside the top 3 was when Finn unfortunately lost his footing after kicking off a reversaboard. Finn and the rest of the boys' 4 x 1 lap relay team carried on gallantly but could never catch back up to the others.
In the field events, Chaucer's young athletes were even more impressive. According to reports, the team won a number of the jumping and throwing events.*** These results proved crucial when the final standings were calculated.
Most onlookers believed that St Thomas had probably won the competition, given their perceived dominance on the race track. When the event leader read out that Sawley were fourth, Granby and ourselves were thought to be battling for runners-up spot. However, when we heard that Granby and St Thomas were joint 2nd, the Chaucer contingent exploded with joy (or just stood there in disbelief)!
Well done to everyone in the team. You reached for the stars...and nearly jumped over them!
Thanks go to Mrs Hayes and Mrs Wheatley for their much-appreciated help (again). Also, I would like to thank all parents for making sure their children were properly prepared with clothes, kit and snacks etc (and those that even cancelled doctor's appointments on short notice).
The district finals will be on April 1st at Moorways in Derby. Please keep your eyes open for another, more thorough round of try-outs, as I'm sure there will be healthy competition for places in the team.
